Original Compositions - Easy Violin Pieces

When we look through the learning resources for elementary level violin students, we find that many pieces are either arrangement of music for other instruments or traditional folk tunes. Here, we like to highlight some original compositions for easy violin that are available to teachers and students (specifically, by UK’s examination standard of Grade 1-2).
1. Kathy & David Blackwell – Fiddle Time Series
The Fiddle Time series is no stranger to many violin teachers and students. The three volumes of Joggers, Runners, and Sprinters have nice original pieces and arrangements in various styles. The violin part is well thought-out with clear instructions, while the piano part is simple and effective.
2. Edward Huw Jones – Violin Star Series
Like the Fiddle Time series, the Violin Star series is popular among violin teachers and students. Violin Star comes in three volumes. They include original compositions and arrangements by Huw Jones.
3. Edward Elgar – Six Easy Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op.22
Also known as Very Easy Melodious Exercises in the First Position, these six pieces are written in the key of C or G major.
4. Alfred Moffat – Six Easy Pieces, Op.32
Moffat was a Scottish composer and collector of old English music. The six easy pieces are among his original compositions for the violin.
5. Rory Boyle – Creatures Left Behind by the Ark
Boyle is a Scottish composer and the professor of composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Creatures Left Behind by the Ark is a set of seven easy pieces for violin and piano. Each piece is named after a non-existing creature, and the music portrays the creatures in imaginative ways.
6. Shinichi Suzuki – Suzuki Volume 1
If you are looking for original easy violin compositions, look no further than Suzuki’s volume 1. Suzuki composed a few pieces in this volume himself, namely the Allegro, Perpetual Motion, Andantino, Allegretto, and Etude.
7. Katherine & Hugh College – Easy String Series
The Easy String series by Boosey & Hawkes include four volumes of simple pieces for violin. In the order of difficulty level, they are Stepping Stones, Wagon Wheels, Fast Forward, and Shooting Stars.
8. Adam Carse - The Fiddler’s Nursery
Carse was an English composer known for his compositions for beginners and students. The Fiddler’s Nursery is a set of twelve easy pieces for young violinist.
9. Christopher Norton – Microjazz Collection for Violin
Norton is a New Zealand composer based in the UK. His Microjazz series is a well-known educational set of pieces for various instruments using jazzy tunes. The Microjazz Collection for violin comes in two volumes.
10. Pam Wedgwood - Really Easy Jazzin' About, Up-Grade!, and Jurassic Blue

11. Mary Cohen – Superstudies Book 1 & 2
Cohen’s Superstudies are original studies designed for young players. While they are in fact technical etudes, students can perform them as musical pieces as well.
12. Walter Carroll – Enchanted Isle
This fine collection contains 10 titles such as Dawn at Sea, Smooth Waters, There Lies the Land and more composed for violin and piano by Carroll.
